| SPEAK UP NOW!
The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) is currently considering new protections for our wildlife and habitat to better handle the increased pressures from the oil and gas boom. They want to hear from people concerned about the impacts that oil and gas drilling is having on the places we love, and that you believe stronger protections are needed to ensure that our wildlife, water supplies, and local communities aren't harmed when oil and gas drilling occurs.
You can a ttend a hearing THIS COMING MONDAY (details)
Write a letter TODAY (deadline is Monday, June 23) (details)
Make sure you ask that the Commission:
- Ensure the oil and gas drillers leave our state as beautiful as they found it -- the rules should have stronger requirements for drillers to restore the land as soon as drilling is complete to avoid unnecessary scars on the landscape and damage to wildlife habitat.
- Require the oil and gas drillers use the latest technology to protect our water, air, wildlife and the mountains.
- Create strong protections for future generations of Coloradans.
- Ensure that wildlife habitat is adequately protected.
- Protect landowners: ensure that drills rigs are set back at least 500 feet from homes (the current standard of 150 feet does not provide an adequate buffer).
- Require planning to prevent harm to wildlife: comprehensive development plans should be promoted more aggressively, good planning will help expedite the permitting process for drillers and protect wildlife habitat.
- Widllife expert consultation: when drilling occurs in core wildlife habitat there should be mandatory consultation with the CO Division of Wildlife in order to protect wildlife.
The Colorado Oil and Gas Commission will be holding a public hearing on Monday, June 23rd from 8am-12 in Denver. This is the only chance you'll have to speak up and add your voice to those calling for strong new environmental protections.
